Where will your Kanchenjunga Trek take you?
From your initiation period in Kathmandu, the Kanchenjunga Trek begins with a drive and flight to Bhadrapur then onwards to Birtamode.
Then, your exploration and adventure begin in earnest.
Your trekking holiday will make daily progress along the trail to reach both Kanchenjunga south base camp and Kanchenjunga north base camp.
This trek provides the perfect vantage point to see (and experience) all the reasons that Nepal is such a huge draw for trekkers, mountaineers, hikers, dreamers, and those who love to challenge themselves. From its ancient viewpoints, you will see Makalu, Chamlang, and of course the mighty Everest. Raising above you will be the stunning Kanchenjunga (sometimes spelled Kangchenjunga) at 8,586 m (28,169 ft). It lies between Nepal and India, with three of its five peaks directly on the border. The mountain is also close to Tibet, and its name means "The Five Treasures of Snow" in Tibetan.
Did you know that Kanchenjunga was thought to be the highest mountain in the world until modern instrumentation and exploration assigned it third place? It was first climbed in 1955. The summit itself is never breached to respect a promise made to Tibetan royalty – the Chogyal.
Highlights of the Kanchenjunga trekking adventure
It’s impossible, to sum up in words the wonders you will see, and the exhilaration of each new experience on your trek through this awe-inspiring national park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 1784 sq km).
This vitally important high altitude conservation area is teeming with exotic mountain species, including snow leopards, red panda, musk deer, and Great Tibetan sheep.
Highlights will also include unique views of those magnificent mountains, but also: crystal-clear glacial lakes; Rhododendron forests as far as the eye can see; lush alpine foliage, flora, and fauna on the lower slopes; and Himalayan villages steeped in Nepalese culture and heritage.
High-altitude experiences that uplift you
This is a remote and rugged trekking area. The sense of achievement from navigating a virgin trail in the Himalayas will live with you for the rest of your life. For some leisure explorers on the Kanchenjunga trail, the highlight is crossing the Mirgin La, a series of snow-covered passes between the south and north valley. It will test you and delight you in equal measure, not least as the views are incredible.
This is a strenuous grade trek, meaning you will need a good level of fitness and experience in using crampons and ice picks while trekking. Snowshoes and thermal clothing will be vital!
Safety first and the best time to go
