Fascinating 9 day trek - Langtang Valley region north of Kathmandu, near Tibetan border

Fascinating 9 day trek - Langtang Valley region north of Kathmandu, near Tibetan border

Just completed this somewhat challenging trek as a first-time trekker at age 61! Wanted to explore the Langtang region with my husband and adult son - supported by Ramesh, the owner of the trekking company and 2 porters who became our very good friends, managed it without too many hiccups.
It does not reach areas as high as some of the better known treks but as parts of this region were decimated by the 2015 earthquake, the pathways have been rebuilt with many stone steps which are also thoroughfares for ponies and donkeys carrying building and food supplies to the higher regions so the steps get knocked around a bit making for some challenging walking. A fascinating area with culture heavily influenced by the Tibetan immigrants over several centuries.
The care and concern shown by Ramesh and his team are phenomenal, starting with the planning which begins weeks before with applications for trekking permits etc taken care of. He equips us with all the gear we might possibly need. Being February it has the potential to snow (and does).
In a 4WD vehicle to our kick-off point, Ramesh ensures we by-pass traffic jams and the town accommodation is great. Once trekking commences he patiently guides us at our own pace, and ensures the nighttime accommodation in tea-houses is comfortable and meals are good. He closely monitors the health of his charges - when I get a bad headache at the highest altitude, I don't realise till afterwards how closely he is observing me for signs of altitude sickness; were I to show any symptoms he would insist we went back down to a lower tea-house.
Ramesh and the porters are fun to be with - we have lots of laughs and lots of interesting discussions about local history and culture and they are interested to hear about Australia.
The trek is geared around our capabilities - it is flexible - can be lengthened or shortened to suit.
Ramesh has many other trekking routes - all over Nepal - varying from a few days to months. I fancy the month-long 'Rhododendron Kingdom' trek next - a mixture of teahouses and camping - camping is the real way to do trekking he tells me!

EBC was an absolutely wonderful adventure. The views of the highest mountains are simply wonderful. Ramesh (owner of Nepal Mountain Trekkers) arranged a guide for me who was very careful, helpful and nice person. During the trek, Ramesh also called me several times and asked about the trek and any difficulties if I faced or not. I must say that Ramesh is a very careful, responsible and trustworthy person. This was my first visit in Nepal and I met Ramesh hardly for 2 days. He is now a very good friend of mine. I look forward to the next Nepal trek with the Nepal Mountain Trekkers!

Langtang Valley Trek - So good!

I went on a trek with my parents, who are over 60, to the Langtang Valley. We were taken with our guide and hotel owner and now friend, Ramesh, who was amazing in organising it and catering it to our needs. It was a stunning time, and the friends we made were an absolute highlight - including our two porters, Amar and Pralad, who were just the best guys to be spending this time with. I highly recommend going on a trek with these guys, it's so well organised, and Ramesh can cater for whatever your needs are - in our case, the distance we were travelling each day was a bit too much for my parents, and our days were shortened accordingly, and Ramesh was happy to do so. He certainly made me feel like one of the boys, enjoying some chang rice beer with local families once we'd reached the highest point of the trek, which I might add is so worth the trek. It is a stunning place, nestled in between the snowy mountains, with options to do some day walks from there to some of the peaks - which I highly recommend! There was a lot of laughs along the way - it was actually turned into just a hilarious and fulfilling time because of our guide and porters, and I wouldn't hesitate to go with them again!

Our first hike in Nepal and it was incredible!

Ramesh organised our itinerary for my husband and I based on the amount of time that we had. This included a personal airport pickup, our return flights to and from Lukla, a guide and porter for us, and also our accomodation in Kathmandu before and after our trek.

We set out planning to get to Tengboche, as our time was limited, but we were able to take it day by day depending on how we were fairing. As we hiked, we thought, this isn't as hard as we thought it would be - let's go further! Our amazing guide named Tika was obliging and set a new route for us mid-hike and we made it all the way to Ama Dablam base camp. Tika was always only a few steps ahead and was happy to tell us the names of all the mountains we could see along the way, the names of trees and plants, and the names of the villages across distant valleys. When we reached our destination each night he was always busy organising our meals, cups of tea, making sure our drink bottles were filled and that we were happy and healthy. He's a very polite, caring and experienced guide (with great english skills) who we'd definitely request for our next Himalayan experience and would certainly recommend to anyone else too.

We cannot express how satisfied and impressed we were with this company; a well run, honest business that really care for the customer's experience and safety. Nepal Mountain Trekkers allowed us to choose our own start and end date and plan the trek each day with no fixed or locked in agenda. This type of flexibility is something that you do not get in large group tours. It was our own private tour without the private tour price.

I had the joy of getting sick the day before we left Nepal and Ramesh organised for my care at a local hospital - complete with sorting our insurance and transfers to and from the hospital. He went above and beyond his duty as hotel manager and trekking company operator - he made a difficult time easier. Both Ramesh and our guide Tika came to the hospital to visit and make sure my health was on the mend.

There are many companies in Kathmandu that can take you on a breathtaking hike; but this one truely has the heart and passion for this exceptional place on Earth.

We are already planning our next trip to Gokyo Ri with Nepal Mountain Trekkers - We couldn't recommend higher! Nepal Mountain Trekkers 100%

10 daagse trekking gemaakt regio Gokyo. Prachtig gebied. Onze gids TB was erg vriendelijk en actief om alles zo goed mogelijk voor ons te regelen. Ik zou dit bedrijf zeker aanbevelen. Het mailcontact voorafgaand aan onze reis was ook altijd vlot en duidelijk.

Manaslu Tsum Trek – 10th October to 4th November 2017

Manaslu Tsum Trek – 10th October to 4th November 2017
Kit Oi and Robert

Overview:
This is a near perfect trek. It is a stunningly beautiful area where you have a grandstand view of the big mountains yet they are intimate, and there is much that is culturally fascinating. Magnificent sunrises and sunsets on big white peaks - we can’t get wait to go back!
Ramesh of Nepal Mountain Trekkers had organised everything really well, and our guide Min, and porters, DB and Bikash were excellent and were fantastic companions.
We very much recommend our itinerary as below.

We drove from Kathmandu to Gorkha, then to Barpak to start the trek. This is a big prosperous village, which was the epicentre of the earthquake in April 2015. We walked from there to Larprak over a ridge, Mamche, at 2,700 metres. There are great views of Ganesh Himal from Mamche.
Larprak was also badly damaged and there is a huge reconstruction effort to rebuild it in a safer site, New Larprak.
We walked from there to join the main Manaslu circuit at Khorlabeshi, by the thundering Bhudhi Gandaki. We followed the river, to Jagat, and then headed into the amazing Tsum Valley.
We passed through Lokpa to Chumling, which is a delightful village. There are beautiful terraced fields and mature Bhutan pine forests. We visited the newly constructed health post, built to be earthquake resilient and using local material as well as traditional building methods.
After Chumling, we walked to Gumba Lungdang. That’s a lovely walk through pine, hemlock and birch forest, with views of Ganesh 1 and 2, and Lumbo Himal as well as more distant views of Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli. The monastery was nearly completely destroyed and if you want to stay there, it is best to have your own tent. The nuns do have 3 tents but they are not in good condition. They do feed you well though from their vegetable garden. There are awesome views of Ganesh Himal if it is clear.
We walked from there to Chhokang Paro, another delightful village, with lots of mani walls and chortens. Look out for the Tsum Valley Café run by Pema – he had been a barista at Himalayan Java in Kathmandu, and makes fantastic espresso, cappuccino, macchiato etc. What a delightful and surprising treat!
From Chhokang Paro, it is an easy walk to Nile through beautiful fertile large flat fields, the amazing and valuable productive land of the upper Tsum Valley, and lots of chortens, mani walls and gompas leave you in no doubt that you are in Buddhist land. Beyond the fields, the near vertical walls of the valley become the snow capped 6,000 metre+ peaks of Cherke Himal, Kipu Himal and Langju Himal.
Mu Gompa is fascinating and from there you can see sunset and sunrise on Ganesh 2 to the south.
We went from there to Bhajyo at 4,030 metres. It is a beautiful spot, though you need tents to stay here - a wonderful place to relax, with Langju Himal and Tabsar towering over you. We walked from there to another pasture, Thongbu, 4,500 metres, to get a clear view of the pass and chorten on the border with Tibet.
From there, we retraced our steps back to Mu Gompa, then to Nile, where we stayed in delightful Mingma’s Homestay. We went from there back to Chumling, Lokpa, then re-joined the main Manaslu circuit trail and on to Deng,
From Deng, it is worth visiting Bihi village, above the main trail at Bihi Phedi. Bihi is a lovely traditional village, which hardly sees trekkers, and there is a newly reconstructed school, built of wood, again with earthquake resilience principles and very aesthically pleasing with traditional styles. We walked to Namrung, which is charming.
The next day we walked to Lho and up to the impressive Ribung monastery.
From a viewpoint close to the monastery, we saw sunrise on Manaslu – absolutely awesome.
The walk from Lho to Samagaon is spectacular, we passed through the sleepy village of Shyala, where there is a magnificent amphitheatre of mountains - Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, Manaslu, Naike Peak, Larkye peak, Samdo Peak, Saula Himal. It is truly heart stopping.
Samagaon is a delightful village and what a location. One could easily spend days there. We made a day hike to Manaslu Base Camp - fantastic views of the huge shimmering glaciers and of Manaslu, Manaslu North and Naike peak. We got nice cups of tea at base camp - they were on a lull, the October climbers had gone and the November ones had not arrived yet.
We tore ourselves away from Samagaon, to Samdo, which is high and fascinating. It is a Tibetan village that moved over the border to its current location when the Chinese entered Tibet in the 1950s. It was very icy and white when we were there. We had hoped to walk to the border with Tibet, but the snowy conditions made this difficult.
From Samdo, it is an easy walk to Dharamsala at 4,460 metres. It was perfectly clear and the views of Samdo Peak, Naike Peak, Larkye Peak, Cheo Himal, Manaslu and Manaslu North were wonderful.
Dharamsala accommodation is not great, but the location is staggering. We were extremely lucky and had a perfect crossing of Larkye La, seeing sunrise on Larkye peak; and as we headed down, the most amazing views of Cheo Himal, Himlung, Pongkar peak, Kang Guru, then Lamjung Himal and peeping over it, Annapurna 2. We passed by large glaciers, the Salpudanda glacier and walked down to Bhimtang.
Bhimtang has the most wonderful sunsets and sunrise and is surrounded by a myriad of high peaks.
From Bhimtang, it is a very fine walk to Gho, through an ancient and magnificent forest, with regular views back onto a cirque of white fluted peaks and glaciers.
Gho is a proper village, with fields of buckwheat and millet, and flower gardens and we stayed at a lodge with a warm solar shower…
After Gho, we drop down to Dharapani to join the Annapurna circuit. We stayed in gorgeous Tal with its waterfalls, pretty gardens and delicious food.
From Tal the first part of the walk to Syange is beautiful with the thundering Marsyangdi river in a deep gorge. After that we hit the road, and from Syange, we took a jeep to Besisahar. - and from there, by car, back to Kathmandu.
